Durée

The installation Durée explores this very battle between clock time and subjective time. It uses a custom-developed system to duplicate sound and translate it into light, creating an unpredictable and meditative experience. The rules of the system resemble the inner workings of clockwork, but the outcome is much more fluid and confusing, reflecting the human experience of time, where different emotional states and memories can coexist. A music piece might evoke both haste and calm or recall childhood memories, proving that we can experience multiple time zones simultaneously — something a clock could never show.

In this collaboration between audiovisual artist Boris Acket and percussion collective Slagwerk Den Haag, visitors are invited inside this clockwork. Robotic drums play bellplates, instruments that simulate the sound of church bells. Their sound is picked up by microphones and duplicated in Acket’s audiovisual system. As clicks of time battle with the meditative tones of the bellplates, visitors are drawn into a contemplative experience, temporarily forgetting the installation’s subject itself: the nature of time
